Speech connections between stations A to N are made over a principal cross-point network 20 by means of links 1 to N which have access to common control circuits for purposes such as ringing, busy tone, or the general functions of a register controller, by way of an auxiliary cross-point network 24. Connections are made over the auxiliary network one-at-a-time in a pulse cycle the time slots of which identify the link circuits (Fig. 2, not shown) or the common control circuits (Fig. 3, not shown). A connection over the auxiliary network is first set up over one path current through which then establishes marks whereby the necessary companion paths are made. The cross-points are preferably PNPN diodes. The first paths may, however, be set up over PNPN diodes while the companion paths are connected by operation of electromechanical relays associated with each diode.
