The key comprises the housing with an upper cover half-shell and a lower cover half-shell of a housing bottom, and an insert pivotally mounted relative to the housing between a rest position and a use position. The method comprises forming a preform (55) of a pushbutton (19) of a key, where the preform comprises a push button body, a locking unit forming a pushbutton guide in an axial translation in rotation of the push button relative to a housing, and a protection unit (61) for the locking unit; surface treating the preform; and removing the protection unit. The key comprises the housing with an upper cover half-shell and a lower cover half-shell of a housing bottom, and an insert pivotally mounted relative to the housing between a rest position where the insert is retracted into the housing, and a use position where the insert is extended relative to the housing. The preform, the locking unit and the protection unit are made of only one part and formed by a Zamak (RTM: zinc, aluminum, magnesium and copper alloys) injection molding. The protection unit comprises extensions in the locking unit on the basis of a cover of the pushbutton. The extensions include a ring (63) surrounding the body of the pushbutton. Radial rods (65) are connected to the body of pushbutton by a privileged rupture point. The privileged rupture point is placed in a recess at an end of the locking unit. The surface treatment step includes polishing the preform with rollers, and metal depositing on the preform by electrolysis. The preform is connected to a cathode by a portion away from a part making the covered pushbutton and points in the direction of an anode at the time of the metal deposition step.
