Method for recognition of characters e.g. serial number, from image of e.g. dull composite piece of aircraft engine, involves determining interest area, related components and characters, and validating characters based on segmentation data

The method involves determining and storing segmentation data for each of pixels of a stored image during segmentation (E1) of the image. First and second basic coefficients, first and second form coefficients and first and second indecision coefficients are determined (E11, E12) using two different algorithms, and third basic, form and indecision coefficients are determined (E13) from the first and second coefficients to determine the segmentation data. Area of interest, related components and characters are determined (E2-E4), and the characters are validated (E5) based on the data. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a set of instructions for implementing a method for recognition of characters (2) a computer readable data medium comprising a set of instructions for implementing the method for recognition of characters (3) a device for recognition of characters.
