The molecule can be derived from bacteria or from fungi of the Monascus species, especially Monascus pilosus, Monascus rubber or Monascus purpureus, or from the sequence prior to the initiation codon of the phosphoenolpyruvate carboxy kinase (acuF) gene of BCRC 38072 submitted by the Food Industry Research and Development Institute.
