R1 = 1-8C alkyl, 2-8C alkenyl, 2-8C alkynyl, 3-8C (un)saturated cycloalkyl, 1-8C O-alkyl, 3-8C O-cycloalkyl, 2-8C O-alkenyl, 3-8C O-cycloalkenyl, 2-8C O-alkynyl, 3-8C O-cycloalkynyl (all optionally substituted by one or more halo and optionally interrupted by O, S, or N), up to 16C aryl or up to 16C aralkyl (all optionally substituted), aromatic or non-aromatic mono- or polycyclic heterocycle (optionally substituted), NH2, NHalc1, NHalc2, NHalc3 or ONHalc4; alc1, alc2, alc3, alc4 = 1-8C alkyl; R2 = H or halo; R3 = H, 1-8C alkyl or halo; R4 = NHR' or NHOR; R', R = H, 1-8C alkyl, 2-8C alkenyl, 2-8C alkynyl, 3-8C (un)saturated cycloalkyl, up to 14C aryl (optionally substituted); R5 = H or 1-8C O-alkyl; R6, R7 = alkyl or CH2-O-1-8C alkyl; or R6 + R7 = form a ring. Independent claims are also included for: (1) the preparation of (I); and (2) intermediates of formulae (II), (III), and (V). OM = a protected hydroxy group.
