Also new are (A) DNA (Ia) representing the eryAI-eryK region of the same cluster (8160 bp, S2); (B) nucleic acid corresponding to one or more open reading frames (ORFs) within (I) or (Ia); (C) polypeptides (II) encoded by (I) and (Ia); (D) isolated DNA (Ib) representing a region of the gene cluster for oleandomycin biosynthesis (6093 bp, S3); (E) nucleic acid corresponding to one or more ORFs within (Ib); (F) polypeptides (IIa) encoded by (Ib); (G) strains of Saccharopolyspora erythrea (S.e.) in which specific enzymes are inactivated such that particular macrolides are produced; (H) method for producing oleandomycin precursors in Streptomyces antibioticus (S.a.) by altering an ORF of (S3); (J) thymidine 5'-(trihydrogen diphosphate), P'- 3,4,6-trideoxy-3-dimethylamino-D-xylohexopyranosyl ester (dTDP-D-desosamine) and its base addition salts.
