Zusammenfassung:	A prepn. of galactaric acid, HOOC(CHOH)4COOH, by oxidn. of galacturonic acid, HOOC(CHOH)4CHO, is claimed. This is effected in an electrolytic cell, the anode compartment of which contains an aq. soln. of galacturonic acid, in the presence of a redox system. The electrolytic cell used to carry out this process is also claimed. The redox systems used may be Ce/Ce, Mn/Mn, PbO2/PbSO4, MnO2/Mn, Ag/Ag, NiOOH/Ni(OH)2 and (more pref.) Br2/2Br.
