Zusammenfassung:The ion accelerator has an accelerating resonator in the form of a double conductive walled cavity whose inner (4) and outer (1) walls are energised by anti-phase signals. The cavity has two internal electrodes assymmetrically disposed in the cavity and an ion source (14) to one side of the cavity coupled by a drift tube (13). A number of further drift tubes (5,7,9,11,) are disposed within the cavity, aligned with the first cavity and with an outlet drift tube (13) on the opposite wall coupled to an outlet arrangement (15). The odd numbered drift tubes are coupled to the inner wall (4) of the resonant cavity, and the even numbered drift tubes are coupled to the open end of the first internal electrode. The axis of the path through the drift tubes in perpendicular to the long axis of the resonant cavity. The axis of the electrode adjacent to the ion source is offset from the cavity axis by 0.5 to 0.7 of the cavity radius, and the axis of the electrode adjacent the ion exit is offset by 0.1 to 0.4 of the cavity radius. The difference in circumferences of the two electrodes lies in the range 1.5 to 2.5.
