A press for compacting waste disposed, in particular, in drums, the press comprising a cylindrical compacting chamber (1) and an operating cylinder (5) which is closed at its top end, said operating cylinder being fitted with a piston (16) which is fixed to a ram (17) suitable for penetrating into said compacting chamber (1), and with hydraulic compression means (16-20) being provided to act on the two opposite faces of said piston (16), said press being characterized in that the operating cylinder (5) includes means (6-8) for sliding vertically over said compacting chamber (1), the bottom end of the operating cylinder (5) being open and resting when in its low position, in sealed and locked manner (13-15) on the top end of said compacting chamber (1), said compacting chamber being closed at its bottom end by a plate (2) provided with means (3, 4) enabling it to slide vertically inside said compacting chamber (1), with sealing means (2A) providing sealing of said compacting chamber when said plate (2) is in its low position.
