The invention relates to a method for generating a video signal of the American standard from a charge transfer device (CTD) of the European standard, and a control unit for such a device. The method applies to a CTD device of the type comprising a photo-sensitive matrix of average resolution, a register for reading the said matrix and an output stage able to convert the electrical charges to an exploitable electrical signal. The method consists in pacing the loading and the shifting of the read register in accordance with repetitive sequences having 3 useful lines for which the read register is loaded, and 2 black lines for which the loading of the register is disabled. The control unit comprises a sequential circuit composed of flip-flops B1, B2, B3, an input combinational logic unit (LE) and an output combinational logic unit (LS). The logic unit LE triggers the 3 flip-flops so as to place them successively in 5 states; 3 states corresponding to loading commands (useful lines), and 2 states corresponding to disabling commands (black lines).
