Zusammenfassung:The oxidised ore is heated by creating a plasma jet in a reducing gas, which travels through a zone of the ore in which an electric discharge is established. The Ni- and Co-oxides in the ore are reduced to form a molten nickel bath, which is desulphurised and degassed. The amt. of reducing gas employed is 1.2 to 1.75 times the stoichiometric amt. required. For refining the molten Ni, the reducing gas is pref. replaced by a neutral gas, which removes residual Fe- and Co- oxides and gases dissolved in the melt. During refining, the melt is pref. heated to ca. 1620 deg.C for tapping. Used for mfr. of Ni shot or ingots employed in the prodn. of steel, cast iron and various alloys. Nickel with a purity above 99% can be obtd. by a process which is less expensive than conventional processes using electrolysis or nickel carbonyl.
