Device for a sheet-fed rotary printing machine having pull lays (9), coupled to the machine drive, for imparting a defined pulling movement to every arriving sheet (8) and having a sensor arrangement for monitoring the positions of the lateral edges of the arriving sheets (8), wherein a sensor (7) is arranged at least at the lateral edge of the feeder in pulling direction, said sensor providing two distinguishable signals which indicate the setpoint positions of the sheet before and after the pulling, wherein coupled with the sensor (7) is a digital electronic control system which interrogates the conditions of the sensor (7) before and after the pulling for determining whether the sheet not yet pulled is located outside the response range of the sensor (7) and the already pulled sheet within the response range thereof and which issues a corresponding error report in case the sensor (7) does not provide at least one signal indicating the respective setpoint position of the sheet.
