Hand contact sensor for grenade detonator - uses oscillator with coil wound within detonator cap whose inductance is varied by proximity of hand

The firing mechanism includes an electronic circuit controlling the sequence of ignition after removal of the pin. A detector is incorporated to sense when the grenade leaves the users hand in order to start the sequence of operation. The detector comprises an oscillator whose frequency is between several hundreds of megahertz and a few gigahertz. The coil (L) of the oscillator includes a few turns of wire lying close to the users hand when the grenade is being held. A capacitor (C) is connected in parallel with the coil, and has a value of about 7pF in order to provide resonance at a frequency of 500MHz. Resonance of this circuit is not however achieved while the users hand influences the effective inductance of the coil.
