Antacid formulations - contg. carbonated apatite and gel former

Pharmaceutical compsns. for the prevention of the harmful effects of gastro-oesophagal reflux and gastic hyperacidity contain (a) at least 1 carbonated apatite and (b) a physiologically-acceptable material that forms a gel under acid conditions. The apatite may be natural or synthetic and may be those having carbonated groups in place of hydroxyls in a hydroxyapatite structure (type A) or those having carbonates in place of phosphates in a phosphoapatite structure (type B). Carbonated apatite of type AB may also be used. The gel former may be alginic acid or an alginate, a cellulose-based material, or a gum. A mixture of cellulose and gum tragacanth is esp. preferred. Compsns. may be solid or liq. and pref. contain a soluble carbonate.
