Lifting gear, for example for a fork-lift truck, comprises upper and lower telescoping mast assemblies (4, 3) which are displaceable relatively to each other by hydraulic lifting means to raise and lower a lifting carriage through the intermediary of a pulley/ chain mechanism (23, 2).
