Zusammenfassung: | The parent patent describes a method for surface treatment of steels to improve their wear properties and at the same time increase their corrosion resistance. The proces consists of covering the piece of steel with a layer of organic varnish contg. particles of a metal the m.pt. of which is below the heat treatment temp. of the steel, then heat treating to decompose the varnish, melt the metal particles and cause the metal atoms to migrate into the substrate forming cpds. of iron with the fusible metal, esp. Sn or Al. In this addition patent, the process is applied to coating titanium and its alloys with tin or a mixt. of tin and aluminium, the heat treatment to melt the metal particles being at 700-1000 degrees C. Specifically the treatment is applied to alloy TA6V consisting of 6% Al, 4% V, balance Ti. More resistant cpds. such as Sn3Ti5 and Sn5Ti6 are formed in the surface of the Ti alloy by diffusion.
