The appt. consists of a sealed reservoir or side well (a) which can be connected to the ambient atmos. or to a pressurised gas, and which is fitted with >=1 injector feeding solids into the well (a). Between the well (a) and the hearth of the cupola is >=1 sloping channel via which molten iron and the injected solids are driven into the cupola; and a return channel. The channels located between the cupola and the well (a) may have various pref. profiles to permit the circulation of the molten iron through the well and back to the cupola; and the channels are pref. formed in refractory bricks located in the cupola wall. The compsn. of the molten iron can be accurately controlled in the cupola so there is no need to treat the iron in a ladle.
