Vulcanisable compsn. consists of (1) 100 pts. wt. polychloroprene, (2) 3-300 esp. 120-150 pts. wt. hardened petroleum extract, and pref. (3) a vulcanisation system. Component (2) is a prod. prepd. by air-blowing at e.g. 250-350 degrees C, a petroleum extract obtd. by the solvent extn. of a petroleum distn. fraction having boiling range of lubricating oils, e.g. 350-600 degrees C, this fraction contg. a major proportion of aromatics. Vulcanises to prods. having a good tensile strength, elongation at break. Good low temp. properties. Low tack at room temp. Good shock-absorbing properties. Can be compression moulded, extruded and calendered. Low cost. Used in devices for damping vibrations and oscillations and absorbing sounds. In linings for storing water. As a mastic, e.g. for application to concrete or metal surfaces.
