Large ring segments made by electroslag remelting - using curved mould-walls and base-plate travelling through an arc

Plant for the electroslag remelting of curved segments uses a water-cooled mould with walls possessing radii of curvature to match the cast block required, and a consumable electrode is fed into the batch and connected to the power supply, the other pole of which is connected to the base of the mould. The mould-base is attached to a drum rotating on a horizontal axis to draw the curved segment out of the mould, and an electrode holder is also fixed to the drum for carrying at least one curved electrode which is fed into the bath by the rotation of the drum; the mould-base and the electrode holder are sepd. to preclude any electric contact via the drum. Used for the mfr. of segments for rings on cement furnaces, flanges, large gear-rings and rings for pressure vessels.
