[Also in Division C5] Bromocyano-acetic acid esters of the formula: wherein X is a hydrogen or bromine atom, and R is a C 1 -C 4 alkyl radical, are employed as antimicrobial agents in the treatment of material liable to be contaminated with microbes. One or more such esters may be applied alone or inadmixture with a diluent. The esters may be used as preservatives, for example for spinning preparations, drilling oil emulsions and emulsions for the treatment of floors, particularly in cases where such emulsions contain anion-active or non-ionic surface-active agents.
