A packed column for gas or liquid chromatography which is at least 2 cm. wide comprises elongated elements separated from one another and passing through the column parallel to the axis thereof. The number and cross-section of the elements is preferably such that no point in the packing is more than 4 mm. from the adjacent elements: 6-20% of the free cross sectional area of the column is preferably taken up by the elements. The elements may be in the form of rods, wires or tubes and in the latter case may be used to facilitate heating of the packing, e.g. by passing a heating fluid there-through or including an electric heating element therein (Fig. 3, not shown). Fig. 1 shows a column 2 having inlet and outlet members 1 attached by necks 3 and suitable sealing arrangements. The elongated elements 11 extend through the column packing 9, sintered metal (plug 8, and inlet and outlet members 1, but the axial element 11a extends only to the surface of the plug 8. There is reference to a column packed with refractory brick with rods of glass, alumina or copper.
