In a graphite-moderated CO 2 -cooled nuclear reactor, corrosion of the graphite is inhibited by adding to the CO 2 a chemical compound of silicon and hydrogen which is gaseous at the minimum temperature of the CO 2 in the reactor cooling loop. Suitable compounds are Si(OC 2 H 5 ) 4 , SiH 4 , and Si 2 H 6 . The inhibitor may be added continuously or intermittently to the CO 2 in an amount of about 0À2% by weight.
