Zusammenfassung: | Polyethers, polyether esters or mixtures thereof containing -(CH2)4-O- groups are used as metal working lubricants. They may be obtained by polymerizing tetrahydrofurane with itself or with alkylene oxides, e.g. the 1,2-oxides. They may also be obtained by reacting a polyether or polyether ester containing -(CH2)4-O- groups and an exchangeable halogen atom with alkali metal derivatives of alcohols; 1,2-, 1,3-, or 1,4-glycols, phenols, or carboxylic acids; by the condensation of 1,4-butylene-glycol with itself, or with 1,2- or 1,3-glycols, or with 1,2- or 1,3-alkylene oxides; by the reaction of 1,4-dichlorobutane, d ,d 1-dichloro-dibutyl ether or d ,d 1-dichlorodibutoxy-butane with 1,2-, 1,3- or 1,4-glycols; and by the esterification of free hydroxyl groups in any of the above compounds with mono- or poly-basic carboxylic acids. They may be used alone, as aqueous emulsions, or with other metal working lubricants such as hydrocarbon oils; complex ester of dicarboxylic acids and glycols; esters, ether esters, and thioether esters of polyhydric alcohols and mono-carboxylic acids or polycarboxylic acids and monohydric alcohols; and other polyethers and polyether esters (e.g. those containing -(CH2)2-O- or -(CH2)3-O-groups). When they are solid or semi-solid, they may be diluted with solvents, e.g. liquid polyethers or polyether esters, ether oils, or complex esters. When they are liquid they may be thickened with fats, solid polyethers or polyether esters or complex esters or with metal soaps of fatty acids. Optional ingredients mentioned are antioxidants such as hydroxy and amino compounds, e.g. iso-octyl phenol, a or b phenylamino-naphthalene or 4-cyclohexylamino - diphenylamine.
