The method involves monitoring the reception of a synchronisation signal (S) sent by a base station and received by a radio telephone. If the reception of the synchronisation information is faultless the radio telephone continuous to receive the message (M). If any fault occurs, and the synchronisation can not be retrieved properly any unnecessary parts of the radio telephone are switched into a current saving mode. The radio telephone stays in this mode for the remaining time of the message transmission, that is until the next test pulse (P) is generated by the synchronisation timer. Pref. all components taking part in the reception, except for the synthesizer and timing counter, are switched off during the current saving mode.
