The invention concerns a transport base for metal plate rolls designed for railway wagons. The transport base 1 includes roll cradles 3 of solid construction, in which the support surface 23 which carries the rolls 20 consists of a concave metal plate and a support structure 10 situated beneath the roll cradles by means of which the weight of the rolls and the transport base are supported by the body 2 of the railway wagon 30 situated beneath the transport base. The roll cradle's support structure consists mainly of only: two U-beams 5 running in the roll cradle's longitudinal direction and thus in the wagon's transverse direction, one of which lies on one side of the cradle's centre line 25 and the other on the other side of the centre line; also bearers 4 in the end zones of the roll cradle lying transversely relative to the cradle's longitudinal direction. The shape of the bearers' upper surface matches the shape of the roll cradle's cross section so that the cradle's plate material rests on this shaped surface. The U-beams 5 in their outermost ends are welded firmly to the roll cradle's plate material on the surface 13 which is facing away from the concave support surface.
