A moving sensor, consisting of a plate (4), is resiliently fixed in a rest position to the wall of the coin channel or held at a distance from the roll lower than the thickness of the thinnest of the admitted coins. The sensor (4) carries the set of movable plates of a capacitor (26) of which the capacity varies continuously. The capacitor (26) is part of an oscillator of which the frequency varies upon the passage of a coin following a deviation of the sensor from its rest position and following the modification of the capacity of the capacitor which results therefrom. The modification of the oscillator frequency during the passage of a coin is determined and provides a measurement value for the thickness of the coin. The thickness of the coin is thereby tested independently of other characteristics of the coin. Similarly, the diameter of coins may be tested.
