A catalyst composition comprising a shaped porous carbon product as a catalyst support and a catalytically active component or precursor thereof is provided. Also provided is a process for the selective hydrodeoxygenation of aldaric acid or salt, ester, or lactone thereof to a dicarboxylic acid.
