A system for filtering data items. Terms in a semantic environment are divided into semantic classes. A relevancy vector is computed between comparison terms and target terms from a data item with a relevancy function specific to a semantic class. The position of the relevancy vector is compared with a predefined relevancy hyperplane that divides the relevancy vector space into parts. Each relevancy vector space part encloses a subspace of the rele- vancy vector space and corresponds with a specific filtering function. The solution enables fast semantic filtering of data items and improves accuracy of the filtering decisions.
