The iron (3), preferably a steam iron, comprises a soleplate (6) heated by a heater (9) and an electronic temperature controller (7) with a specific 'anti-shine' operation mode. In the 'anti-shine' mode the soleplate temperature is maintained in a predefined narrow range, preferably 120 to 150 degrees C, which cannot be manually varied. Within this temperature range the fibres of the fabric are not unduly flattened so that light incident on the fabric surface is scattered diffusely rather than producing a reflective effect. Independent claims are included for : (i) a system comprising an iron and a steam ironing station; and (ii) a method for ironing fabrics using an iron operating in a fixed pre-set temperature range of 120 to 150 degrees C.
