Flexibilised melamine resins (I), derived from (a) melamine, (b) 1.4-2.0 moles formaldehyde per mole melamine, (c) 0.5-20 wt% (w.r.t. a + b) of an adduct (c) of (c1) an alkali sulphite, hydrogen sulphite or disulphite and (c2) 1-100 moles (per mole sulphur in c1) of a 2-4C oxirane, in which the OH gps. formed in the adduct may be etherated with 1-20C alkyl, 5-20C cycloalkyl, 6-15C aryl or 7-20C aralkyl gps., and (d) 0-0.5 mole (per mole melamine) of another cpd. which can undergo a polycondensation or polyaddn. reaction with formaldehyde. Also claimed are (i) a process for the prodn. of (I) by (1) reacting an aq. soln. or suspension contg. (a), (b) and opt. (d) to give an intermediate resin and then mixing this with component (c), or (2) by reacting an aq. soln. or suspension contg. all the components; (ii) resin impregnates impregnated with (I); (iii) timber prods. coated with these impregnates.
