In a process for making sanitary articles, in particular wash stands, by moulding under pressure while using two mould halves which in the closed position define between them a mould cavity for accommodating the slip, both mould halves, in order to simplify the way in which the process is performed, can be brought together relative to one another for closing the press by relatively movable press elements, and both press elements are rigidly connected to one another in the closed position of the press. The mould halves are closed via an air cushion with which one of the mould halves is moved forward together with the associated receiving plate relative to the other mould half. Furthermore, the invention relates to an apparatus for performing the process, in which apparatus one of the two mounting plates is suspended from a longitudinally guided slide, whereas the other mounting plate is arranged on a stationary press element but can be moved forward relatively by an air cushion.
