Process for obtaining cis-4-amino-5-chloro-2-methoxy-N-[1- [3-(4-fluorophenoxy)propyl)-3-methoxy-4- piperidinyl)benzamide

Process for obtaining cis-4-amino-5-chloro-2-methoxy-N-[1- [3-(4-fluorophenoxy)propyl]-3-methoxy-4- piperidinyl]benzamide. Comprises subjecting 4-[4(amino-5-chloro-2-methoxy)- benzamido]-1-[3-(4-fluorophenoxy)propyl]-3-methoxy- 1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridine (formula II) to a catalytic hydrogenation process in an organic solvent, using as catalyst platinum oxide, platinum on activated carbon or rhodium on aluminium oxide, as 1 to 10% with respect to the tetrahydropyridine, at pressures of between 1 and 100 atmospheres and temperatures between 10 degree C and 100 degree C. The product obtained, cis-4-amino-5-chloro-2-methoxy-N-[1- [3-(4-fluorophenoxy)propyl]-3-methoxy-4- piperidinyl]benzamide (formula I), has useful therapeutic properties as a gastrointestinal prokinetic agent for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux, retarded gastric voiding and intestinal pseudo-obstruction.
