A furniture element (1), in particular a shelf unit or rack with at least one storage level, has a basic structure (2) with at least one set-down surface (21) and a cover panel (11), wherein the basic structure (2) can be rotated in one of two possible opposite directions of rotation (R1, R2), and can be displaced in a predetermined direction of translatory movement (A), relative to the cover panel (11) via a translatory/rotary fitting (12), with at least partial positive guidance, wherein the translatory/rotary fitting (12) has mutually facing bearing surfaces (31, 41) with running grooves (32, 42) and rolling bodies (13), which are guided therein, and also a guide channel (33), which predetermines the direction of translatory movement (A), wherein the basic structure (2) can be moved relative to the cover panel (11) from a starting position into an intermediate position and onwards into an opening position, and back, wherein, in the intermediate position, the basic structure (2) has been rotated in a direction of rotation (R1, R2), and displaced in a predetermined direction of translatory movement (A), relative to the cover panel (11), wherein a guide bolt (6), which is arranged on a guide carriage (5), is guided in the guide channel (33), wherein at least one axial bearing (7, 8) by means of which forces acting axially on the guide bolt (6) are dissipated directly or indirectly to the cover panel (11) is fixed on the guide carriage (5).
