Zusammenfassung:	The invention relates to a welding apparatus (100) and to a method for conveying a wire electrode (1) to a position with a defined free wire-electrode length (S) protruding from a contact tip (141) of a welding torch (140) of a welding apparatus (100). Information on a voltage change between the wire electrode (1) and a reference electrode (160) is used in order to determine a position of the wire-electrode end (2) at the time of the voltage change. On the basis thereof, the wire electrode can be conveyed to the desired position with precision.
