A digital microscope (2) comprises: a stage (10) for holding a sample; and an overview image generation assembly (60), comprising: an overview digital camera (68), arranged on a first side of the stage (10) and directed towards the stage (10), wherein the overview digital camera (68) comprises an overview image sensor (61) and overview camera optics (65), with the overview camera optics (65) having a center axis (66); and an overview illumination assembly (80); wherein the overview illumination assembly (80) comprises a plurality of overview illumination LEDs (82), wherein the plurality of overview illumination LEDs (82) are arranged on a second side of the stage (10), opposite the first side, and wherein the plurality of overview illumination LEDs (82) are arranged around the center axis (66) of the overview camera optics (65) of the overview digital camera (68).
