The invention relates to a device (1) for cleaning a surface (2), comprising a control unit (14), a movable cleaning element (7) for accommodating a cleaning cloth, an electric motor (15) for moving the cleaning element (7), and a liquid supply device (12) for supplying liquid to the cleaning element (7), characterized in that the control unit (14) is configured such that the electric motor (15) moves the cleaning element (7) and the liquid supply device (12) supplies liquid to the cleaning element (7). The control unit (14) is configured such that the supply of current to the electric motor (15) is instantaneously interrupted during the cleaning process of the surface (2), and the control unit (14) determines a measure for the frictional resistance by means of a detected current intensity curve (20) of the electric motor (15) after the interruption. For example, the supply of liquid to the cleaning cloth can be controlled in such a way that the humidity of the cleaning cloth is automatically kept constant. The invention also relates to a method for cleaning a surface.
