METHOD OF KNITTING A KNITTED COMPONENT FOR AN ARTICLE OF FOOTWEAR AND KNITTED COMPONENT

A method of manufacturing a knitted component (130) for an article of footwear (100) comprises:holding a first portion (1150) on needles (1003) of one of a first needle bed (1001) and an opposite second needle bed of a knitting machine (1000); knitting a tongue portion (124) with the knitting machine (1000) while the first portion (1150) of the knit element (131) is held on the needles (1003); shifting the first needle bed (1001) on the knitting machine (1000) in a first lateral direction relative to the second needle bed; joining the first portion (1150) and the tongue portion (124) to form a combined portion (1152) while the needle beds are shifted; holding the combined portion (1152) on the needles (1004) of one of the first needle bed and the second needle bed of the knitting machine (1000); knitting a second portion (1154) of the knit element (131) with the knitting machine (1000) while the combined portion (1152) is held on the needles (1004); shifting the first needle bed (1001) on the knitting machine (1000) in a second lateral direction relative to the second needle bed; and joining the second portion (1154) and the combined portion (1152) while the needle beds are shifted to form the knitted component (130).
