Zusammenfassung:A process for the continuous production of glyoxal in a reactor by oxidation of ethylene glycol in the gas phase with oxygen, cooling the reaction mixture to obtain an aqueous solution of glyoxal and a glyoxal depleted, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide containing gas stream, in which carbon monoxide in the glyoxal depleted gas stream is oxidized and the oxidized stream recycled back to the glyoxal producing reactor as a diluting gas.
