The area array detector for the container/vehicle inspection system comprises: a plurality of sparsely arranged detector assemblies, wherein a first detector assembly is different from other second detector assemblies; and a backplane for carrying and mounting the plurality of detector assemblies, thereby the area array detector supporting a plurality of scanning modes is enabled.
