Zusammenfassung:A method of converting poly(ethylene terephthalate) to terephthalic acid includes a glycolysis step in which poly(ethylene terephthalate) is reacted with ethylene glycol in the presence of zinc acetate catalyst, a hydrolysis step in which the product of the glycolysis step is reacted with an alkali metal hydroxide to produce an alkali metal salt of terephthalic acid, and an acidification step in which the product of the hydrolysis step is acidified to yield a precipitate containing terephthalic acid. Each step of the method can be conducted at ambient or near-ambient pressure, and the method produces terephthalic acid in high yield and high purity.
