Zusammenfassung:	An object of the present invention is to provide an active material for a secondary battery negative electrode having excellent charge-discharge characteristics (charge-discharge capacity, initial coulombic efficiency, and cycle characteristics). The object is achieved by providing an active material for a secondary battery negative electrode containing a composite containing a filler and a matrix, the filler containing silicon particles, the matrix containing at least one selected from the group consisting of carbon, SiOC, and SiOx (0.5 < x < 1.5), the matrix further containing a nitride, and N1s binding energy of the nitride by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) having at least one peak in a range of above 395 eV and 405 eV or less.
