The spent lining material is extracted by means of the reciprocating movement of a device for recycling spent lining materials. Said device for recycling spent lining materials is configured in the form of a screw-type working member which moves through the access opening into the cathode assembly of the electrolysis cell along a cantilevered guiding support for a roller with the aid of a carriage which has a bucket conveyor disposed in the centre part thereof for moving the extracted material from the outlet end of the screw conveyor into a bin disposed behind the bucket conveyor.
