Method for dynamic configuration of an industrial data network (10), the industrial data network (10) comprising a network of interconnected physical data links configured by at least one data network controller (20) to form a virtual network of data links, comprising:- receiving (P1) a request for a project-specific data network configuration in an engineering station (11),- automatically generating (P2) based on said request a project-specific communication policy by selecting at least one configuration pattern out of at least one predefined configuration patterns in the engineering station (11),- transmitting (P3) the project-specific communication policy to the at least one network controller (20), and- configuring (P4) at least one data link transmission node (31) of the virtual network of data links according to the project-specific communication policy by the data network controller (20).
