Zusammenfassung:The present invention is associated with the design of a photonic integrated circuit with tapped delay lines that can act as a direct-form Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter with symbol rate flexibility. Compared to previous implementations, it combines the symbol rate flexibility with the small size and the low cost aspect of photonic integration. The delay elements are based on the combination of smaller Micro-Ring Resonators (MRRs) that have tunable time delay and larger MRRs that can contribute to the total time delay with their round-trip time. The circuit can also accommodate operation with multiple Wavelength Division Multiplexing channels, provided that their spacing is the same with the wavelength periodicity of the time delay. The circuit can be combined with typical transmitters and receivers and used as an adaptive time domain equalizer in optical transmission systems. It can also be used as an optical correlator in optical processing systems.
