Zusammenfassung:	An encoder includes a scale and a sensor. The scale has first and second absolute patterns formed along a measurement direction of the scale. The sensor includes first and second absolute light receiving members. The first member receives light from the first pattern, and includes first and second light receiving elements. Each first element outputs a first signal having a first phase. Each second element is aligned alternately with one first element along the measurement direction, and outputs the first signal having a second phase. The second member is opposed to the first member across a light source, and receives light from the second pattern. The second member includes third and fourth light receiving elements. Each third element outputs a second signal having the first phase. Each fourth element is aligned alternately with one third element along measurement the direction, and outputs the second signal having the second phase.
