The friction stir welding apparatus (202) comprises a spindle housing (204), and a pin tool (206) rotatable relative to the spindle housing (204) about an axis (208). The friction stir welding apparatus (202) also includes a first shoulder (210) not substantially rotatable relative to the spindle housing (204) about the axis (208). The friction stir welding apparatus (202) also includes a second shoulder (212) opposing the first shoulder and not substantially rotatable relative to the spindle housing (204) about the axis (208).
