MENISCUS PROSTHETIC DEVICE

Meniscus prosthetic devices are disclosed. The meniscus prosthetic devices are configured to replace the functions of a healthy natural meniscus. Methods of manufacturing, selecting, and implanting prosthetic devices for use as a replacement meniscus are also disclosed. The present invention concerns a prosthetic device (100) for replacing a damaged meniscus, comprising a central portion (110) comprising a resilient polymeric material and an outer portion(108) surrounding the central portion and having an increased thickness relative to the central portion, the outer portion comprising the resilient polymeric material and tensioned with at least one reinforcing fiber embedded the resilient polymeric material. The outer portion is sized and shaped such that a compression force imparted on the prosthetic device by the femur and the tibia displaces the outer portion radially outward from the central portion; moreover, the outer portion comprises a first section (112) having a generally semi-ellipsoidal profile similar to a natural meniscus and a second section (bridge portion 114) connecting ends of the first section, the second section sized and shaped to engage a femur notch to secure the prosthetic device within a knee joint without penetrating bone. Collectively, the meniscus prosthetic device and associate method is utilized for treating patients with damages menisci.
