Spindle drive having an electric motor and a spindle mechanism which is driven by the electric motor, and method for operating a spindle drive, wherein a rotor shaft of the electric motor is connected in a rotationally fixed manner to the spindle (5) of the spindle mechanism, which spindle is operatively connected to a spindle nut (11) of the spindle mechanism, wherein the spindle nut (11) is arranged in a rotationally fixed manner, but such that it can move in a linear, in particular axial, manner, on the housing (2), in particular on the housing (2) which has a housing part (8), of the spindle mechanism, wherein a piston rod (6) is connected to the spindle nut (11) and protrudes out of the spindle mechanism, in particular out of the housing (2), in particular the housing part (8), wherein a first seal (9) is arranged between the piston rod (6) and the housing (2), in particular the housing part (8), and wherein a further seal, in particular a shaft sealing ring, is arranged between the spindle and the housing, so that the interior region of the spindle mechanism is pressure-tight, in particular hermetically sealed, in relation to the surrounding area, wherein the spindle drive has a means (10) for detecting the pressure in the interior region of the spindle mechanism.
