A coated article (100, 200, 300), comprising a substrate and a coating adjacent to the substrate and formed using a binder (110) and a plurality of microcapsules (112) dispersed in the binder (110), at least one of the plurality of microcapsules (112) including a shell defining an internal compartment and a phase change material positioned in the internal compartment, the phase change material having a latent heat of at least 40 J/g and a transition temperature in the range of 0°C to 50°C. The shell includes a set of functional groups chemically bond to at least one of the substrate and the binder (110), and the chemical bonding of the set of functional groups forms at least one of an amide group, an ester group, an ether group, an urea group, and an urethane group.
