A photodetector (318) is configured with respect to the waveguide (106) for detecting luminous intensity of an optical signal. An electro-absorption modulator (320) is configured with respect to the waveguide (106) for electro- absorption modulation of the optical signal. An integrated heating element (1 15) is located alongside and spaced apart from both the photodetector (318) and the electro-absorption modulator (320). the integrated heating element (315) is configured for controllably heating the photodetector (318) and the electro- absorption modulator (320).
